The races of Temra are divided into two categories - humanoid, and animistic. Humanoid races are those who most resemble humanity, and animistic races are those whose appearances and internal makeup are the most different from humanity. While most people of Temra don't see humanoid races as superior in any way to animistic races, there is an important reason for making the distinction. Namely, all humanoid races can interbreed with each other, while the animistic races can (generally) only breed within their race without the help of magic. Specifically, this is caused by physical compatibility - and, therefore, has an effect on inheritance within Temra.
As all humanoid races can interbreed with each other, those with heritage from many different races not only exist, but are fairly common on Temra. As such, the rules of inheritance of specific traits are well-known. In Temra, when a human and a non-human interbreed, or two non-humans of different races, in almost all cases, the resulting child will be of either the father's or the mother's race. Hybrids, as a rule, do not exist in Temra. Though a parent's coloration may be passed down to a child of a different race, very little else continues on.
The exception comes with human/nonhuman pairs.
As all races in Temra are descended in some way from humans, should a human and a nonhuman of any race have a child, it is possible for the child to be born similar in appearance to a human, but with the traits of the non-human parent. As the child grows, in these rare cases, they will at some point in their lives change from human to nonhuman, usually during adolescence, similar to how vampire children undergo metamorphosis into adult vampires. While this is generally not a problem for children who know of their inhuman heritage, it can come as quite a shock to those who, for some cruel twist of fate, do not.
While this phenomena is fairly uncommon, it is far from truly rare, and most Temrans know of it, even if they don't know someone who has experienced it themselves. The true rarity on Temra is hybridization.
Sometimes, whether by the influence of the gate or through a strange twist in magic, a Temran child of two nonhuman parents will be born with a mix of their parents' traits. This is extremely rare, and in most cases, the child is considered a Weirdling, not entirely of this world.
