Aftergate takes place in a world that was once home to a global civilization, spanning several continents, but due to the catastrophe of the Gate's emergence, few things from that civilization survive. One of the worst effects of the Great War was severing the ties between continents; sea travel is a difficult thing when the level of technology is roughly equivalent to what we had in the middle ages, aside from a few societies.
The main story of Aftergate takes place on a continent the locals refer to as Temra. It's a large landmass, running from just south of the Arctic Circle to just north of the planet's equator. While other continents exist, visitors from them are rare; most visitors come from Samrena, a continent south of Temra.
Geographically, Temra has two (sometimes three) distinct regions. Most people divide the continent into Nor Temra and Sur Temra, splitting it roughly in half into northern and southern regions respectively, but some refer to it in three parts, according to climate - Nor Temra being the northernmost third, consisting of mostly cold temperatures with harsh, long winters and short, lukewarm summers, a more temperate Med Temra, consisting of extremely variant seasons, and Sur Temra, which, being closest to the equator, has long, warm summers and short, temperate winters. Politically, the entire landmass is divided into multiple territories and countries, some diverse and others dominated by single species.
Temrans believe that their continent is where the Gate opened, though its exact location is impossible to chart, as it continues to bounce around across the world.
The far western shoreline and much of its southeastern bay are controlled by the mers; also in the west is the Sphincti Desert, a large, barren, desert expanse inhabited mainly by Sphinxes. The southeastern swamplands of Temra and its southern jungles are mostly controlled by naga. The cold northlands are mainly home to Shifters, though humans have made homes almost everywhere in Temra.
Five lakes dominate northeastern Med Temra; these are called the Five Ladies, as each has a distinctive 'personality' to sailors navigating their waters. From these five lakes, a large river traverses Temra, splitting the southern half of the continent into two halves, west and east.
