"Even a caged bird will, growing wiser, eventually learn to open its door of its own free will, because of how much it wants to fly." -Genma Shiranui
"A gilded cage is still a cage." -Unknown
Name: Kestrel
AKAs: Kes, "Jess", "Pet"
Age: 14
Gender: Male
Race: Harpy
Deity (optional): Harue
Description: A small young man, Kes (as he likes to be called) stands about five feet tall, though he usually looks a bit shorter because he hunches when he walks. His eyes are a bright orange color with a large, dark pupil, and his hair is ginger-colored with grey-blue bangs; like many harpies, he also has feathers at the nape of his neck and across his shoulders and back, though not on his chest.
He doesn't wear a shirt, displaying his beautiful plumage, reddish on his back and shoulders, with blue-grey wings which have dark flight feathers. His short pants are made of fine materials, fit for a king's palace, and he wears a set of very fine necklaces, one of which is fashioned in the form of a golden collar. Around both ankles are seemingly irremovable gold rings, tied to which are a set of heavily-embossed leather strips.
Family (optional): Kes is alone in the world; he has no blood family, as far as he knows, and few friends.
Personality: Kes is quiet and doesn't speak much; he never really used to have reason to. He seems to have a hard time trusting people, due to his background, as well. Despite this, once opened up, he's actually a fairly normal boy, albeit a strangely innocent one. Despite the horrors he's seen, or perhaps because of them, he hasn't grown up very much in some ways, enjoying sweet things and playing games. At other times, though, he seems far too mature for a boy of fourteen, and the weight of what he endured seems too heavy for his tiny shoulders to bear.
Biography: When a harpy is born, it is from an egg laid by their parents. Just like all of his kind, this is how Kes came into the world. When he was still in his shell, however, he was stolen from his parent's nest by those who buy and sell human beings. While most realms in Temra have outlawed slavery, some still practice it, and it was for one of these realms that Kes' egg was bound. Many unscrupulous people will pay quite a handsome sum for an exotic slave that they can raise from infancy, after all, and such a person purchased Kes before he had hatched from his shell.
Born and raised for the purpose of being an entertainer and companion to the young son of a bandit king, Kes - full name Kestrel, after the bird his feathers resembeled - had only the finest things as a child. Soft beds to lie in, fine silks and jewelry to wear, for many it would be a charmed life despite its lack of freedom. Unfortunately, the prince who owned Kes was a cruel and sadistic man, abusive towards his servants, both free and enslaved. Though he presented a kind face to those outside, the ones close enough to him knew the truth. Kes was his favorite, for better or worse - while he was careful not to permanently harm the boy, he also spent much more time and attention on him. To ensure that Kes couldn't ever leave him, he commissioned a pair of enchanted anklets fashioned to look like jesses; these anklets had the ability to subsume Kes' free will, and, if he were within a certain range of the prince, would compel him to return to the prince when called. While Kes resented this, there was little he could do to fight back against the magical compulsions of the jesses.
One night, however, the prince was called away on business and didn't take Kes with him. Some of the other palace servants helped the young harpy escape from his master while the prince was too far away to activate the powers of the jesses. Now, Kes travels in search of a way to break the curse and remove the anklets, so he can finally, for the first time in his life, be truly free.
Equipment: A golden flute cast especially for harpy hands
Weapons: N/A
Magic: Unknown to himself, Kes is a true bard - one who has the natural power to cast spells of illusion and enchantment through music and performance. He can make the words of a story real, can raise the spirits of his allies and dash the hopes of his enemies, and cast lights, sounds, and other sensory illusions through his playing.
