Name: Penelope Mystral
AKAs: Pip, Fins, Shark
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Race: Merfolk
Deity (optional): Kaz
Description: A smallish, androgynous girl in humanoid form, Pip has short-cropped black hair and blue-green eyes that compliment her tanned, brown skin. She usually wears loose-fitting tunics and binds her small breasts to appear more masculine, taking the appearance of a boy to protect herself from the dangers of the streets. In mer form, she has the tail of a shark; she has a set of gills in her neck as well as in her sides, but only in mer form. She is very proud of the fact that her race is very ambiguous to those who don't know what to look for.
Family (optional): Pip is an orphan who spends most of her time on land, away from her people.
Allegiances (optional): She sees a kinship between herself and the priests of Kaz, if only because they're the ones who have mostly been looking out for her.
Personality: Pip is a grade-A scamp and a trixy lass (or, rather, lad, as others know her), who has gotten by on her wits and her speed for her entire life. She doesn't have much of a notion of personal space or property (except that what's hers now is hers forever) due to her lifestyle and upbringing, or lack thereof. She's witty, sarcastic, and honest-to-gods actually friendly, as long as other people are friendly to her. Some have described her as 'pleasant, but vexing'.
Biography: Born to a poor mer family, Pip's deck has been stacked against her from an early age, as she lost her parents to plague when she was but a small child. Much too young to survive on her own and with no other family to speak of, she would likely have died, if it weren't for the unlikely intervention of a fisherman who happened to accidentally catch her in his nets one evening.
The fisherman was as devout a follower of Kaz as any of the Trickster's worshipers get, and, believing that the young mer girl who landed in his net was a sign from his god, fed her, took care of her, taught her about luck both good and bad, and tried to keep her off the streets. Unfortunately, he was a poor fisherman, and that year and others were tough in Estrin, and so she found her natural agility and quick thoughts made her an excellent thief soon enough. Still, a scamp of a thief and an elderly fisherman don't make a lot of money, and luck for Pip ran out once again when her foster father, desperate to make as much as he could before winter, went out too late in the year and was caught in a freak storm. Once again, Pip was without a family.
Still, she'd made friends among the other street urchins and members of her foster father's church, and so she was never without company or assistance as she tried to make her own ends meet. As she got older, some of the other girls took her aside and told her about the dangers of being female and on the streets. They showed her how to act and dress like a boy, how to disguise her figure as she began to come into womanhood, and Pip took to those things like the proverbial fish to water. She'd always been an active child anyway; the mannerisms expected from a boy came naturally to her.
Still, Pip watches and waits. Someday, she tells herself, she'll find a treasure to steal, a treasure big enough to buy her way out of the slums of her home city and into a rich lifestyle. She dreams of saving up enough to become an adventurer and leave Estrin, fighting her way to the life she feels she was always meant to have. Someday, she tells herself. Someday, her luck will change.
Equipment: Pip's most prized possession is a locket she has from the time she was small, a memento from her real parents.
Weapons: She carries a set of knives for defending herself with, just in case.
