The world of Temra is vast and allows for the creation of incredibly interesting and unusual characters. However, there do still have to be some restrictions on what can be played, hence the requirements for submitting character sheets. If someone wants to play an unusual character, though, far be it from me to say 'no' off the bat - there's just a few more hoops that a person needs to jump through.
There are two forms of 'special' characters, and both of them are monitored more carefully than the average player character. The first is the 'Gate' character.
The existence of the Gate means that every so often, people and things from other times and places end up in Temra, people who follow other rules than Temra does, with different magic and different powers. These refugees rarely, if ever, get home again, and are here on Temra to stay. Such 'Gate characters' are only open for registration for short periods of time, to keep them what they are - rare. The Gate opens on Temra only for short amounts of time, after all - at other times, it's either closed, or elsewhere.
Registering a Gate character is fairly simple - all it takes is waiting for the Gate to open (there will be a status in the news fader) and adding "GATE:" to your character sheet's title.
The second form of special character is a little more complicated.
Certainly, Temra is a land of kingdoms, armies, temples, and great, heroic deeds. Thus, it stands to reason that Temra is populated by kings, generals, priests, paladins, and great heroes to do the deeds. However, creating a character who is of political importance to a kingdom is in many ways a responsibility. Most of the time, these characters can be shared NPCs who are capable of being borrowed by anyone who needs them, but if a player wants to play a king or a prince, there are a few guidelines they need to pay attention to.
First, as this is a responsibility, the player creating the important or plot-relevant character (when and if site plots ever get running) needs to be able to dedicate the time and effort to playing them. They need to be available for threads that need their character, and need to be available to be contacted by people who need them, whether by PM or by some other method. There are no specific time frames for activity, but I'd at least like people playing important faction leaders to be seen online once a week or more.
Second, if you ever have to leave, even temporarily, YOU MUST TELL SOMEONE. Don't create a powerful faction leader and then randomly disappear for a month without notice. Also, don't create an important character if you arent' sure you'll be sticking around, either. If you have to go on vacation, let people know so we can deal with your absence, and if you have to leave Aftergate for any reason, please at least do us the courtesy of arranging what will happen to your character when you're gone (killed off, disappeared through the Gate, etc.) Failure to abide by these guidelines will prevent you from making important characters in the future.
In order to create an important character, you must PM an admin from one of your main accounts and request the position you would like. We reserve the right to refuse anyone.
Because of these guidelines, neither Gate characters nor important faction leaders may be a person's first registered character.
