Lucan gave a single-shouldered shrug, his wing moving with the motion. "Some do. It's easier, and cheaper, to get than some plants anyway." That was partially because he often accompanied the hunting parties and so knew how to get some food for himself, but that was beside the point. "If we didn't hunt or barter we would pretty much starve." Lucan had been tempted to make a quip about whether or not the Vincent thought they ate bird seed but decided against it.
Once he finished cutting the carrot to pieces he shoved them off to the side and went to retrieve the rabbits from the spit.
"You can say that again." Leah said with a sigh as she lamented their rather poor abilities as farmers while she watched Lucan cut the rabbits from the spit. At least, that was until she turned in the chair to look at Lex. "Where are you from, anyway?"

"Hargrave," he said, flopping down onto the cot. "You've probably never heard of it; I don't even think it's big enough to be on any maps. Just a tiny little village." He laid down and stretched out, a little cramped, but that was to be expected since it had obviously been made for Skyborn; at least it accommodated his wings well enough, though his tail draped over the edge. "Mostly my kind and some humans. What about you? Lived here in Sovereign all your life, city boy raised and bred, I'll bet."

Lucan had taken the rabbits back to the table and had laid them out so he could start cutting the meat from them when he heard Lex's comment which made him glance up as he tried to decide whether it was just a comment or some insinuation that he didn't know what hardship was like.
He decided to bite his tongue and go with the one that would not likely lead to an argument. "Pretty much. Lived here all my life, but I started going on bartering and hunting trips as soon as I was allowed." Which had been sooner than most other Skyborn were allowed, but he wouldn't be surprised if he'd managed to annoy his minders into submission on the subject.
"What about your village?" Leah added from her own chair, listening to the dull sound of Lucan cutting apart the rabbits. "Are Vincents decent farmers or do the humans do that?"

"We're decent at it," he said, shrugging. "We're a lot more solidly built than you lot, so we're stronger and have more endurance." It wasn't really a brag - even if he was phrasing it in a way that implied that sort of thing. It was certain he was built on more solid and muscular lines than the waifish bird-boy. "We tend to be better at crafts, though, than farming, so it's still the humans who do the most. They're good at everything." And great at nothing, went the rather common saying among the Vincents of his village.

Leah gave a nod, both curiosity and understanding in her expression. If she wanted to indulge in more questions then she decided against it as she stretched her arms above her head before she stood. "Well, I should get home. Remember, you two play nice. I'll send someone in the morning to make sure you didn't kill each other." With those parting words she left through the front door to go out into the night which had quickly fallen in the short period of time they'd been there.
After Leah left Lucan didn't immediately speak up and only focused on getting a couple of plates from where he'd stored them. "So, Vincents are really that much stronger?" He asked as he started to portion out the food. The portions were far larger than any human could hope to handle, but he imagined that the Vincent's appetite was just as large as his own.
As far as strength went he knew that Skyborn were at least stronger than humans (practically everything was), but he knew that most Skyborn could not hope to lift a deer as effortlessly as he'd seen Lex do so earlier that day.

"Well, no offense, but, you guys aren't exactly made for strength," Lex said with an expressive shrug. "You're all super scrawny, all your muscles are in your wings. Sure, means you can do crazy things in the air nobody else can, but you're too light to do any kind of real work. We're stronger 'cause we've got more muscle mass and we've also got more stamina. Picking up that deer was nothing for a Vincent like me."

Lucan raised a brow at Lex's comment as it immediately grated against his nerves and he paused in his work. Too light to do any "real work"? Lovely. He had a braggart in his house, this was going to be so much fun.
"What about Vampires?" He retorted as he continued to portion out the food. "They're pretty scrawny too, but they seem to do a lot of heavy lifting."
The Skyborn had been to a few human cities, places where Vincents weren't exactly common. It still hadn't taken someone with the eyes of a hawk to notice the vampires that worked the docks or did largely menial work. It was like that to an extent even here in Sovereign, although the Vampire Quarter near the base of the mountain was a far cry from those human cities.

"Yeah, but their entire bodies are muscle," Lex pointed out. "They also don't have to worry about having to fly, either, right? You guys literally have hollow bones and stuff. Lift too much and you'd probably snap in half."

"We've managed to do fine so far." Lucan replied tersely as he finally finished portioning out the food and took one of the plates over to Lex, the rabbit meat mixed in with the vegetables.
"Here. Eat up." He said as he set the plate down in front of his guest. He could already tell this was going to be a very long six weeks.
