The sun was beginning to set and while for the human populace of Cadena that meant a time to retire for their homes the residents of the Vampire Quarter were just starting to awaken.
Cenric had already woken about half an hour before and had already made his way to his master's workshop to get it ready for the day. It was a process that involved lighting the lamps as well as lighting and working the forge's flame to the intensity they needed. It even involved lighting the candles his master had placed in front of the shrine to Zer located at the very back of the shop.
This had been his routine for the last two years when he'd entered the local blacksmith's service at a mere fifteen years of age. It had taken a lot of money to secure his apprenticeship, an opportunity his older siblings had not received, and Cenric was determined to make the most of it. For now that meant making sure the shop was ready for work to begin before his master arrived and learning whatever he could that could secure him a living in the future.

"Heya, Fangs!" piped up a small voice from behind one of the large pieces of equipment in the forge. A small, androgynous person had apparently been hiding inside the shop for.... likely some time, considering the amount of soot smeared across the bridge of 'his' nose and covering the admittedly already-dirty clothing 'he' wore. A large grin, missing a tooth, greeted Cenric as he popped out from behind the equipment and waved. "Wanted t'say hi so's I didn't scare ya when you looked behind the thingamajig and found lil' ol' me. Howzzit? You gonna make nails again today? Or is it horseshoes this time? I hope the old man doesn't mind me hangin' out for a bit afore 'e gets 'ere sometimes."

Cenric had only just finished lighting the lamps and had waved the rushlight in his hand in order to extinguish the flame when a familiar voice and face popped up from behind a piece of equipment. That and the sight of soot smeared across Pip's nose was enough to make him laugh as he set the now extinguished rushlight with the unlit ones in a nearby cabinet, careful to make sure the still smoking end was angled away from the others so as not to risk catching them alight.
"Hey, Pip," he greeted his friend as he closed the cabinet door and wandered over. "Both horseshoes and nails today. Old Man Abrams said his horse threw a shoe pulling a cart yesterday so we're going to replace it," he informed his friend as he sat on a small stool nearby, the only thing you could really sit on in the workshop since they were normally on their feet all day as it was. Making nails and horseshoes was far from his favourite thing. Like most teenagers he dreamed of making far more intricate and impressive things but the master smith had made it known early on that they wouldn't be making swords or trinkets but rather what people would need from day to day. After all, it wasn't like they had nobles beating down their door.
"And I'm sure the smith won't mind you sticking around for a bit. Might even let you stay after we open if it's slow enough. What're you getting up to anyway? Running from the guards again?" The question was accompanied by a playful smile. It seemed like his friend was always on the run from the guards but it wasn't surprising. After all, urchins had to eat too.

"Nah," Pip said, though he did seem to be eating a crust of hard bread. "I bought this with me own coppers! Old lady Margie gave me three coppers fer sum help sweepin' up that ol' shack of 'ers. She's gotta bad back see so's she can't do it all th'time." Pip shoved the bread in his mouth and crunched down. Mouth full, he continued. "Anyway there was sum bigger boys who got upset at summat I said, see? But they're scared've you guys so they didn' chase me in 'ere." He grinned and swallowed. "Old Man Abrams' horse always seems to throw 'is shoes. He's a clumsy old nag. And his horse isn't too graceful either!"

"So you actually did some honest work for a change?" Cenric teased with a grin when Pip explained how they got the three coppers. If he were going to be honest he didn't actually care how Pip got the money as long as they didn't lift it from anyone in the quarter since many were often struggling to get by as it was.
However, if there was one good thing about the quarter it's that it gave Pip a decent place to escape to due to the general ideas that humans seemed to have about vampires even if it wasn't something that worked out in their favour most of the time.
Pip's comment about Abram's horse and the following joke drew another laugh from Cenric. "Wonder how long it's going to be before Abram starts throwing shoes too," he joked in return before he looked toward the open door and the rapidly darkening sky beyond the ramshackle buildings. It was starting to get colder as it got deeper into autumn, dead leaves littering the muddy ground in an array of colours. Just outside he could catch glimpses of the other vampires exiting their homes in preparation to leave for work or whatever it is they did for money.
"Got a place arranged for winter, Pip?" He asked as he looked back to his young friend. Winter was tough on all of them but he could at least say that he had a roof over his head and knew when and where his next meal was coming from, courtesy of the terms of the apprenticeship.

Pip shrugged. "I'll figger somethin' out, dontcha worry, Cenric!" he said with a grin. "I've gotten through winter wivvout freezin' before! Sixteen whoooole years. If nuffin' else, I'll spend it underwater, we're built t'handle freezin' oceans an' the deeper y'go, the less the temp'rature changes 'cause it's always cold." He looked out the window, watching everyone come out. "Y'know... it's real nice watchin' errybody go to work out here. Wiv their candles 'n sometimes wivvout. Jus' like dawn fer all the shopkeeps in the regular poor quarter, 'cept lots more white hair."

"Fair enough," Cenric replied with a smile as he looked back to the window as well to join Pip with their people watching. For some reason he always seemed to forget that Pip was one of the Merfolk, probably because every time they saw one another Pip had legs rather than a tail due to being on land.
Still, he had to agree with Pip that it was nice to watch the others get up and start their days, even on those days where he wished he could stay in his nice warm bed even if he had to share it with three other people. However, Pip's comment stirred a different train of thought.
"Y'know, I always wondered why so many of us have white hair. I mean, I know the priests say we all came from Zer and he had white hair but you'd think after so long you wouldn't see it so much." Even then, Cenric wasn't sure how much he bought into that particular legend. After all, how does an entire race come from just one man? Probably another question for the priests the next time they came around.

"Why do harpies all have bird legs, and why's the sky blue? 'Cause that's just the way it is," Pip said with a shrug. "'Sides, lots of you guys have other hair too. Anyway if it's just 'cause y'all come from Zer that'd mean the Silverlings are all secretly vampires too right, 'cause they all have white hair. Mebbe it's 'cause somethin' about how all the races was made took all the color outta your hair. Anyway, whatever it is, I like it." Pip fiddled with his braid. "Apparently some Mers have real pretty hair but mine's just black. Boooring."

Okay, Pip definitely had a good point. Just because vampires were able to have children with other races didn't mean that the vampiric traits weren't dominant or however it was that worked. The comment about Silverlings drew another smile from him. "Maybe whoever they came from was a brother to Zer or something," he joked with little awareness of how close to the mark he really was.
"And your hair's just fine, Pip. Besides, how're you gonna get away from guards or those boys if you stick out like a sore thumb? They'd be able to track you for miles if you had green hair or something like that."

Pip giggled, tossing his hair over his shoulder and finishing his bread.
"Nah, the guards are too stupid," he said with a shake of his head. "But thanks for the compliment. And it means nobody but you knows what I am so I can dive in the ocean and they couldn't track me. Which I've done before, but shhh, I didn't tell you that."
He sighed.
"I wish I had money to get a 'prenticeship. Or strength. I'vegot scrawny arms, errybody says so."

Cenric made a zipping motion across his lips as Pip told him not to reveal his secret escape route, a smile still on his face until his friend said that he wished he had the money for an apprenticeship, something that made Cenric frown instead.
It was common knowledge that an apprenticeship was one of the few ways out of poverty that was within reach of relatively normal people. Even if you didn't become a master craftsman it was still better than general labour which was a pretty meagre existence. It had taken his family years to scrape together the money for an apprenticeship just for him, his siblings unfortunately left to try and find their own way.
"You never know. Maybe you'll impress someone and they'll decide to teach you," he replied even as he knew how unlikely that was and so he continued, "or maybe you could join a priesthood. Don't some of them house their priests?"

Pip stuck out his tongue. "Ewww. I was raised by priests for a couple years after the old man died, and no thank you! Even the fun ones are way more devout than I am. All I need is to toss a coin to the shrines now'n then and Kaz looks out for me. Though I guess his priests weren't so bad. Still, I'm not 'xactly the temple type." Pip thought fro a long moment. "Nahhh, I'm gonna be a 'venturer, and get real rich findin' Lost Lore and old coins nobody makes anymore and sellin' em to nobles! You can come with me. Like I said, you can make my armor and swords 'n stuff. Then you can get outta here too, Cenric. And make more'n nails and horseshoes all the time."

Cenric laughed once more, spurred on my Pip's reactions even as his friend explained just why he was not keen on becoming a priest. However, the route Pip did propose was an interesting one. Cenric had never really considered the life of an adventurer since he'd always assumed he'd complete his apprenticeship and use that to support his family, even if it meant making horseshoes, nails, hinges, and farming tools for the rest of his long, long life.
"Sounds like fun and as much as I'd love to go with you, there's one problem," he pointed out with a smirk of his own, "the master's not teaching me how to make swords and armour so unless someone's willin' to teach me then all you'll need me for is to make sure your big, fancy horse is shod when you make it rich."

Pip scrached his head, frownig deeply. "Well, that's stupid," he said, crossing his arms. "Eve if nobody here is gonna need 'em, you should still know how t'make 'em! What if you go to another city and start your own shop an' some big fancy 'venturer needs 'is broken sword fixed up? He should still teach ye how t'make 'em." He frowned and glared at the ground, then snapped his fingers. "Wait! I know. When I get my first haul o'loot, I can pay for you t'get 'prenticed to a better blacksmith who'll teach ya how t'make swords!" He put his hands on his hips and grinned. "Is Pip a genius or what?"

"Don't let Darin hear you say that," Cenric said with a grin in reference to the smith as he leaned forward to brace his arms over his knees., "but if you can manage that then I'm not gonna complain. Sounds pretty genius to me."
Part of him wondered why the smith had always been so adamant that he wouldn't learn how to make weapons and armour. He understood that people around here had no real use for them but, like Pip said, surely it was a skill he should have just in case, right?
A moment later Cenric looked up as he heard the sound of approaching footsteps and quickly stood up from the stool he'd been sitting on as he straightened out the leather apron he'd donned when he'd initially arrived. He wasn't sure if the person coming towards the shop was the smith, a customer, or the guards coming by for their weekly "donation" but he wanted to be prepared whatever it was and that meant not looking like he was sitting on the job.
